FAQs
What is RN, Psychotherapy?
In Ontario, Registered Nurses can independently perform the controlled act of psychotherapy without an order, as long as they have the knowledge, skill, and judgment necessary to do so. Psychotherapy is defined as “an intense client-therapist relationship which often involves the examination of deeply emotional experiences, destructive behaviour patterns and serious mental health issues.” (Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council, 2006).
Registered Nurses have the unique experience of treating clients from a diversity of backgrounds, living with any number of illnesses, both chronic or acute in nature. They have a broad and deep understanding of bodily processes, illness, injury, and healing. Nurses work with clients in many settings and with many different populations. Throughout their training and career, they are responsible for the alleviation of suffering, providing treatments, and educating clients about their health and wellness. This allows for an unmatched basis for psychotherapy, where a holistic approach is vital. Biophysical, emotional, and environmental elements will be taken into account as each client’s unique and client-centred therapy takes shape.
